Waverley's ANZAC Spirit

Cadet Thomas of the Waverley Squadron maybe the Squadron's youngest, and smallest Cadet but he certainly displayed the "Anzac Spirit" supporting the local RSL by selling tokens in his local shopping centre.

A little history.

On October 6 2009, Waverley Squadron will be holding a special parade celebrating 39 years of continuous operation in the Waverley Area. The Squadron was formed in September 1970 and over the past 39 years has operated both boys and girls squadrons. In the past 5 years, Waverley has been a combined squadron having both boys and girls as part of the same squadron. During the 1980s over 100 cadets were members of Waverley, having 3 flights, and flag party and a band on parades. As with many youth organizations, the numbers declined during the late 1980s and 1990s however in recent years the numbers have increased to levels not seen in over 10 years. Squadron Captain, Gordon Manning has been a part of Waverley Squadron for over 30 years in Waverley Squadron, being the Officer Commanding for most of these years.

Waverley Squadron has been encouraging boys and girls between the ages of 8 – 18 years to join and learn about Aviation. It also promotes leadership, discipline, teamwork and also participates in local and district events, including the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal the Waverley RSL ANZAC Day Parade in Glen Waverley.

Recently the Cadets have also participated in training, recreational and field craft camps, received basic instruction in flying a light aircraft at Moorabbin Airport and participated in athletic and swimming carnivals with other Squadrons across the state.

The Squadron has expanded in the last 12 months and now has 30 cadets and 4 officers. The Squadron is also actively supported by a group of parents and friends. The Australian Air League is not only for boys, girls are also encouraged to become part of this organization.

In 2009 Waverley also received Junior Cadet of the Year (Female) L/Cdt Emily Ward and also Cadet of the Year (Male) Corporal Peter Brennan.
