Cadets of the Australian Air League often take part in camps, hikes and outings, which can be organised at Squadron, Wing or Group level.
Hikes are run over one or more nights and may sometimes be run in association with the Duke of Edinburgh's Award - Cadets plan their own hikes and carry all of the equipment they will need, such as tents, clothing and food. They learn to be resourceful and self-sufficient, having to cook and clean for themselves, reading maps and making decisions for themselves. When they reach their objective, they feel a great sense of accomplishment.
Drill in the Australian Air League is designed to promote self discipline and leadership skills. Members start as a Cadet, the lowest rank, then progress to higher rank levels which enable them to the authority to command larger numbers of cadets.
The highest drill rank is Squadron Sergeant. Squadron Sergeants can sometimes command hundreds of cadets!
The Award Program was first introduced in the UK in 1956 as 'The Duke of Edinburgh's Award' as a means to encourage and motivate young people over the age of 14 years. The award was introduced to Australia in 1963. The Award encourages its members to achieve goals in a voluntary, non-competitive, and flexible program.
The Australian Air League operates a progressive badge system to cater for all our members. as well at attending classes 'in squadron' members can attend various education training days and camps operated by Victoria Group. At these camps members utilise experienced instructors to gain badges not usually possible at the own squadron.
Building model aircraft is an important activity at the Australian Air League, while the Cadets are enjoying building and painting their model aircraft, they are learning practicals techniques and improving fine motor skills. As well as this they are also learning the history of the aircraft they are building, the technologies they revolutionised and the role they played in our history.
The Australian Air League Physical Activities departments organise various activities to keep our members fit and healthy (a must for pilots). These include:

Community Fun Day
Monday, 25 May 2009 22:18
On 2nd May Bendigo Squadron was invited to a Community Fun Day at Bunnings Warehouse at Kangaroo Flat. This was a great chance to promote the Australian Air League and recruit new members.
We set up a display amongst other non profit community groups. There was a good attendance from the people of Bendigo to see our display and our Squadron in uniform.
We were very lucky, as Bunnings held a draw for 5 x $1000 donations, and we were the first group to be drawn out of the barrel where Group Operations Commissioner Russell Owen received the cheque from Jason from Better Homes and Gardens on behalf of Bendigo Combined Squadron.
We also have gained at least two new recruits from the day out. So it was a great success overall. Thanks to Mr Owen for travelling up to Bendigo on the day.
